The French is “Qui me lie, o douceur! a la beaute du temps” ‘temps’ means ‘time’, also ‘weather’.
I used ‘day’ partly for the rhyme. Yes, this could perhaps be rendered “to the beauty of this day” — originally I wrote “to the beauty of today” which actually I prefer for rhythm. Mme Mignot, who has read and made useful comments on my translations, said that the meaning in French was, in her opinion, more “the beauty of the day” (as opposed to the darkness of death) rather than “the beauty of today, i.e. this particular day”. Dear Linda, Delighted that you have made contact. Yes, of course, you may quote from my translations, incidentally I have the full eight poems in a charming booklet printed by my friend Roger Hunt Carrooll, another de Noailles enthusiast which I would be glad to send you (this is not a proper publication, for private circulation only). Otherwise, no, I know nothing about Winaretta Singer, indeed I must admit I don’t think I’ve heard of her, I will look her up. Yes, now you mention Prince Edmond de Polignac, this rings a bell. No, Mme Mignot-Ogliatri’s book has never been translated and is out of print incidentally. What’s more of a loss is that Mme Mignot’s book giving the Correspondence between Anna de Noailles and Maurice Barres is also out of print — the author, whom I have met, said she only had one copy herself! On the other hand, a novel by Anna de Noailles, L’Innocence des Femmes (I think) has been brought out this year by Buchet-Chastel. Naturally, this is also untranslated. Might this not be rendered best as “…to the beauty of this day”?

This give the sense of immediacy within the larger context of “all days”. At least, it does to me. It’ simple, but as my French is so excrable, I am not sure if it could be construed as accurate.

What do you think?

I am an American woman, currently writing a book about Winnaretta Singer, and looking for stuff about Anna…

I have been so fascinated by this woman for soooo many years, and I am delighted to find your blog and your lovely translations of some poems.

I see from your posts that you have corresponded with Catherine Perry, as have I.

Here’s what I’d like to know…when I publish my book, may we discuss permission to quote from your translations?

Further, do you know of any material about Anna that is in English? For example, has the Mignot-Ogliatri book ever been translated?

And, do you know anything about Winnaretta Singer and her relationship with Anna? I am beginning to research the next volume of my book, which will cover the years 1890-1914, and I believe the two of them met about 1892. Anna would have been quite young still, but her family members were great friends of Winnie’s second husband, Prince Edmond de Polignac (who adored his Anna), so I’m making an assumption here, that I think is correct.

Oh, I can’t tell you how excited I am to find your blog, Sebastian! Keep up the good work!
